I traveled to Berlin and Magdeburg, In Magdeburg a woman yelled in German “now they’re coming up this way!” I’m of German heritage but for some reason the racism fogged her eyes and she thought I’m a North African migrant. The East is is a bit behind and xenophobic and many people recognize this that’s why we prefer the west. My German friend would not take me to the fest there because of potential issues with racist encounters of me being there.

One of the main differences will be that so many US prisons are run as private businesses, while German (EUropean) prisons are run by the state. A private run prison has little interest to reduce the repetition rate of crime as returning inmates mean more profit while in Germany a returning prisoner means more costs for society..

Made brief visits to Leipzig and Dresden as well. I would very much like to go back and ride bikes on the Ilmtalradweg and eat a Thüringer rostbratwurst again. I don't drink anymore but I would have one more Köstritzer Schwarzbier.

American here. First visited East German back in 1992 when it still smelled from coal burning and Dresden still had destroyed buildings from WWII. A decade + later, lived for two years in a small town south of Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg. During that time we went to East German a couple times including back to Dresden. Anyway, other than knowing the history of the place I couldn't tell any difference between east and west in the way the locals responded to me as an American who spoke bad German. Obviously, other's expeciences will vary. I have long lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and know a bit about bad press. On top of that, I was a sydtems analyst for 30 years. Experience tells me 5hat vague impressions are a big influence on many people. And studies have shown thst most people are very bad at objective risk analysis. It's the way of the world. 🤷🏻‍♂️

15:50 In the United States, there are all sorts of morality judgments made concerning what someone should or shouldn’t be paid. For example, a full-time adult worker stocking shelves in a grocery store doesn’t deserve to earn a living wage, but needs governmental assistance for things like housing, food, and transportation. It is not that the company that they work for cant’ afford to pay more, but it allows the company to increase their profits because their work force receives government subsidies. Apparently, increased profit is more important than the basic dignity of the workers. Meanwhile, the CEO receives disproportionate compensation relative to their actual worth. There are many cases of companies losing money, yet the CEO receives substantial increases in pay.

As a European who has been employed in America, I think of America as a 'slave society' you have the very rich - the owners - and then you have everybody else who work solely for the good of the rich. Americans are brainwashed from early years: Freedom, obedience, control.

I don’t find that to be true for all of Europe. Tap water in countries like Switzerland/Austria and France is the absolute norm when you go to someone’s house. Or at least they offer it to you next to bottled sparkling water. It’s completely fine. Just in restaurants you typically buy sparkling water since you have to pay for water anyway. So why not get the sparkly one?

In 1835, in his famous book Democracy in America, De Tocqueville called the United States the most religious Christian country in the world. Considering the degree to which other nations were religious at that time, this is saying something (It is also, perhaps, saying something about De Tocqueville). Though the degree of religiosity in the US has declined, I suspect the gap with other “Christian” countries has widened. I live in Canada. We are as close to being Americans as any other country. You can’t distinguish us by our accents (Newfoundlanders being an exception), the TV and movies we watch, the cars we drive, the music we listen to, the foods we eat or the sports we play. About the only distinguishing feature between Canadians and Americans is that Canadians overwhelming consider themselves to not be religious. This was not the case back in the 50s but it is now. In Canada you will never hear a Canadian politician asked what church they go to. Indeed, being viewed as “too” religious is likely to hinder your chances of being elected.

Food tastes better in the Mediterranean region of Europe. From Portugal to Italy, and down to Greece, including all the islands in the Mediterranean, having a meal is so much more than ingesting calories. It’s a celebration of the senses. If bland food is what you look for, just land in the UK, or visit any of the Scandinavian countries. Poland and Germany also don’t stand out as something I would pick for a night out. Yet, they do have something going for them in the sweet pastry department. They use far less sugar and you can spot the taste of the main ingredients without being overwhelmed by the presence of tons of sugar. We are like the United States of Europe. The land mass is not that different, but the diversity of different cultures is such, that we can easily access each other’s, and far cheaper than what it means to travel in the American continent. You can find deals for a flight from Madrid to Frankfurt for something like US$60, and we don’t need a passport to travel between member countries. The way that communication lines were established and simplified within the union made it easy to travel and ship products within the union, generating less expensive travel costs and higher product freshness. That being said, at least the southern countries still have large parts of the population who prefer buying local products. One of the successful supermarket chains, Lidl, has a policy of buying produce from local producers. This is something that makes a lot of sense, not only because of the final price, but is also less harmful to the environment. You can also get produce that has matured better before being picked. This means quality ingredients, and if you know what you are doing around the pots and pans, amazing meals. We should all have that option available when we get the munchies.

100% on the seasonal food. I live in england and the in-season fruit especially is to die for. Summer strawberries are amazing; deep red all the way through, sweet and very acidic. English grown Breaburn apples November through May are like crack to me. Best Apple. 10/10. No notes. My local supermarket (a Morrisons) even has a little display of fresh eggs from the farm just up the road. They're all on pallets and you pick the eggs you want, put them in a box that's in a stack off to the side, and off you go! £2 for 12.

My husband and I grew up in religious authoritarian families (in the US), and vowed to do differently for our our kids. We chose a path very much like the "negotiation parenting" you talked about, and while it was indeed hard work, our teenagers are pretty great. I wish we could have given them more independence as they grew, especially biking, but our town infrastructure is quite biking- and walking-hostile, so they're only now getting into biking as teens.

I've been a proponent of universal healthcare in the US since the mid 60s, as it was our debate topic when I was a junior in high school on the debate team. Here we are 60 years later and still debating it. Most companies really don't have good programs for their employees. Only one company I worked for as a manager actually had the best ever. When I went freelance, I had no insurance, except I could go to a VA hospital if needed. When we lived in Canada, we had universal healthcare, but could also have private as well. Living in Austria since the early 90s, I've been covered by the healthcare system here, never a problem with appointments, etc. When I turned 70 I contracted asthma, was on the highest niveau for meds, needed emergency services 3x in 2 months due to breathing rhythm problems. Within 6 months I was place on a newly approved drug program which required a monthly injection for three months, then every two months, at a cost of €3,400 per injection for which I paid about €6/injection. Not possible in the US. I'm slowly phrasing out of that program, down to one injection every five months. In 2019 at a Kur for lung patients, I learned that one of my table partners was no longer on meds, though she still had asthma. I followed her routine, after three months tried to go without meds, but took me three attempts after an additional two months to finally be med free for the past 4.5 years, using natural methods rather than Pharma. I'm still a proponent of universal healthcare to this day, highly recommend it! LG aus Villach-Warmbad.

American here. I used to support "obvious hate speech" laws until I lived in Russia and then visited Estonia. In Estonia the hammer and sickle is illegal to display publicly. Soviet anything is right there with Nazi anything. While I don't disagree with Estonia's perspective, it did hit home to me the fact that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Being as politically split as the US is, I could see hate speech laws snowballing to include A LOT that supporters wouldn't intend.
